Bipolar Disorder In Children : The Widespread Problems To Diagnose
According to reports, bipolar disorder in children can already be visible at an early age of 6. It means that there is a possibility that children that are still young can already have bipolar disorder. It is really hard to determine the symptoms of bipolar disorder in children. In the past, it is considered as a rare case but more and more patients became positive for this disease. Studies suggested that almost 7 percent of the children in the psychiatric facilities are fitted for the standard of this disease.
One of the biggest challenges of this disease is to determine whether a patient is suffering from bipolar disorder or it is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Both groups share the same major symptoms like irritability, hyperactivity and distractibility so these symptoms will not be useful when diagnosing bipolar disorder.
The good thing is that there are also other symptoms that can help identify if a child is suffering from bipolar disorder and here are some of them.
First is Elation. There are instances wherein children instantly laugh hysterically without any reason. It happens anywhere; in school, church, home or even on public places. For people who do not know their situation, they will surely think that the child is only daydreaming of something funny. However, the act of laughing is overacted that may often cause the child to lie on the floor laughing. However, this is not enough to say that a child has bipolar disorder. If this kind of behavior is done on a regular basis, then it may possibly be bipolar disorder.
Second is Grandiose Behavior. This kind of behavior happens when children do something without considering the rules. A good example of this is when a child is inside the classroom. They often talk to the teacher like they were good friends and sometimes, they even try to tell the teacher what to teach.
